How do you choose? Taekwondo, Karate, Hapkido, Jui Jitsu……it can all be a little overwhelming. There is certainly no lack of martial arts schools out there. If you are in a big city, there is literally one on every corner. However, not all martial arts schools are created equal. It is important to do your research before committing to any school. You’ll be happy you did.

One of the most common questions we hear from parents is, "What is the best age to start martial arts?"
The short answer is: it depends on your child.
While age is an important consideration, readiness is even more important. Every child develops at their own pace, and the goal isn't to start as early as possible—it's to start when they are ready to enjoy, participate, and benefit from training.

Trying something new can feel exciting—for both children and parents. One of the questions we're asked most often is, "What can we expect at our first class?"
At Summit Martial Arts, we want every family to feel welcome and informed before they step through our doors. A trial class isn't a sales presentation or a high-pressure experience. It's an opportunity for you to meet our instructors, experience a class, and decide whether Summit is the right fit for your family.

Few symbols are as recognizable in martial arts as the black belt. For many families, it's the goal that first comes to mind when they begin training.
When families ask how long it takes to earn a black belt, they're usually looking for a number.
We think there's a more important question:
When a student earns a black belt, are they truly prepared?
A black belt isn't simply a milestone or a reward for time spent in class. It should reflect the knowledge, skill, judgment, and self-control developed through years of consistent training.
After all, a belt can't defend you.
Only the person wearing it can.
That's why we believe the quality of the martial artist will always matter more than the speed of the journey.

When parents choose a martial arts school, they often focus on the program, schedule, or location. While those things are important, one factor has a greater influence on your child's experience than anything else:
The instructors.
A great martial arts instructor does much more than teach punches and kicks. They create a safe learning environment, build relationships with students, and help children develop confidence, resilience, and respect over time.
So, how can you tell the difference?

Every child develops at their own pace.
Some children are eager to try new activities, while others need a little more time to build confidence in unfamiliar situations. That's why readiness isn't determined by age alone. It's about whether your child is prepared to participate, learn, and enjoy the experience.
At Summit Martial Arts, we believe a successful start lays the foundation for long-term success. Beginning too early can sometimes lead to frustration, while waiting until a child is developmentally ready often creates a much more positive experience.

At Summit Martial Arts, every student is required to participate in sparring as part of their training.
That sometimes surprises new families.
After all, isn't martial arts about forms, fitness, and learning techniques?
Absolutely. But if our responsibility is to teach self-defence, we also have a responsibility to help students learn how and when to apply those skills.

No.
Competition is completely optional at Summit Martial Arts.
While we're proud of our successful tournament team and the accomplishments of our athletes at the provincial, national, and international levels, competing is just one path a student can choose. Many of our students never enter a tournament and still enjoy years of rewarding training.

Since 2014, families have walked through our doors as strangers and become part of something much bigger.
A place where belts are earned, traditions matter, and students are challenged to discover what they are truly capable of.
A place where friendships are forged, victories are celebrated, and every journey matters.
If that sounds like the kind of place you're looking for, we'd love to meet you.
