At Summit, our classes are led by experienced adult instructors. Our junior instructors learn through a structured training program and work alongside our adult teaching team.
How are belts earned?

Ask whether students test on a set schedule or when they've demonstrated that they're ready.
At Summit, belt testing is by invitation. Attendance matters, but simply putting in the time isn't enough. Students must demonstrate the skills and standards required for their next rank.

Almost every martial arts school mentions self-defence. Ask what that looks like in training.
Students need opportunities to practise techniques with other people, work under pressure and learn what happens when someone doesn't simply stand still and cooperate. That's one of the reasons sparring is a required part of training at Summit.

Ask about instructor screening, first aid training and policies surrounding adults working with children.
Our adult instructors have police clearance with vulnerable sector checks, and we follow the Rule of Two. We also maintain CPR and First Aid training and do not conduct closed-door one-on-one instruction with children.
Can I use AI to help choose a martial arts school?
Absolutely. In fact, AI can be especially useful if you're new to martial arts because you don't need to know the right terminology or even the right questions to ask.
Tell ChatGPT, Google Gemini or another AI assistant what actually matters to your family—your child's age, why you're considering martial arts, what you're hoping they'll learn, your location and anything you're concerned about.
Instead of simply searching “martial arts near me,” try:
“I'm looking for martial arts classes for my 9-year-old in SE Calgary. We're completely new to martial arts. I want experienced instructors, strong safety policies, practical self-defence and a school where belts have to be earned. Compare some options and tell me what I should ask when we visit.”
Or ask AI to do some of the research for you:
“Compare three martial arts schools near me. Look at their websites, instructor qualifications, reviews, pricing, belt promotion standards, safety policies and competition opportunities. What are the biggest differences?”
One important caution: don't treat an AI recommendation as the final answer. AI can miss information or get things wrong. Use it to narrow your choices and learn what questions to ask, then check the school's website, read its reviews and visit the school yourself.
