WHAT DO I WEAR FOR MY TRIAL CLASS?
Prospective students can wear shorts/track pants and a t-shirt for their trial class. Long hair must be tied back. All jewelry must be removed.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER MY TRIAL CLASS?
After your trial class, our instructors/staff will discuss if SMA is the right fit for you/your child. Should you decide to register for one of our programs, our registration package will be emailed to you. The spot will be held for 3 days fro the time of the trial class. Please see fees and membership section below for more details.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS READY FOR MARTIAL ARTS CLASSES?
We offer a free trial class to determine student readiness. On occasion, a child may not be ready. In that case, we invite children to return at a later date to try again. We would rather have children wait a few months than push them in to a class they are not ready for.
ARE PARENTS ALLOWED TO WATCH CLASSES?
Yes. We have a parents gallery for viewing in the training area. We ask that all parents/siblings remain seated and quiet during class time.
HOW DOES THE FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE WORK?
All our students train a minimum of 2 days per week. Students may choose which days to attend. You are not locked in to set days each week. The days you choose can be different from week to week.
DO YOU OFFER MAKE UP CLASSES FOR A MISSED CLASS?
Due to the flexible nature of our schedule, we do not offer make up classes for general absences, illness, or family vacations.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT IS BEING TAUGHT EACH DAY?
Our detailed schedule is posted online under class schedule. Please ensure you are prepared for each class. Sparring gear should be brought to EVERY class.
HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE THERE IN EACH PROGRAM?
Each program has a maximum student number. We cap all our classes to ensure our quality remains high.
HOW MANY INSTRUCTORS ARE THERE PER CLASS?
There are a minimum of 1 senior instructor and 1 junior instructor. On Forms and Sparring nights, there can be up to 3-4 instructors to ensure adequate student/instructor coverage.
WHAT IF I HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT MY CHILD'S PROGRESS?
At SMA, we welcome constructive, respectful conversations between parents/staff/instructors. If you have concerns about your child's progress through the program, we ask that you talk to us directly. We want our students to be successful in the program and want to work with you to ensure a positive experience.
WHAT IF I AM INJURED?
We ask that students inform instructors of any injuries before class so we may determine level of participation. If an injury occurs in class, tell your instructor right away. First Aid kits are on site.
WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR REGISTRATION?
All documents must be signed, dated, and initialed where indicated before any participant may begin Martial Arts Activities with Summit Martial Arts Ltd. To complete registration, the student / parent must provide the following within 7 days from the trial class:
1. Void Cheque with Signed Pre-Authorized Debit Form
2. Purchase uniform and membership scan tags
3. Purchase first month of classes in full or at a pro-rated amount based on start date
4. Purchase/order sparring gear if applicable for the student
*After 7 days, incomplete registrations will be cancelled and spots will be offered to the next prospective student.
DO YOU OFFER FAMILY DISCOUNTS?
No, we do not. We believe in offering discounts fairly to everyone. We offer a 1 year membership at a discounted rate to ALL our students. We also offer a discount to those who pay their yearly fees upfront.
WHEN ARE MY MONTHLY FEES DUE?
Class fees are due on the 15th of each month. We use direct withdraw from your bank account for all monthly class fees.
DO I NEED TO SIGN A CONTRACT?
We offer several options for our memberships. Students can choose from a month to month membership or a 1 year contract.
CAN I SWITCH FROM A MONTH TO MONTH MEMBERSHIP TO A 1 YEAR MEMBERSHIP?
Yes, you may switch from month to month membership to a 1 year. Students often start on the month to month to ensure it's a right fit, then move to the 1 year membership. A 1 year membership begins at the time of conversion - 12 months forward from that date. The 1 Year Membership start date does not get backdated to the students original registration date.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE TO CANCEL MY 1 YEAR MEMBERSHIP?
Students need to give 30 days written notice to cancel their 1 Year Membership and compete a cancellation form. As the 1 Year Membership is at a discounted rate, the fees return to the month to month rate (for the number of months completed in the contract) as the student will not be completing the terms of the membership. The difference is due upon cancellation as agreed upon by both parties. There are no additional cancellation penalties.
WHAT IF I HAVE TO CANCEL MY MONTH TO MONTH MEMBERSHIP?
Students must give 14 days notice to cancel the month to month membership. There are no refunds for partial months.
WHERE DO I PURCHASE A UNIFORM AND SPARRING GEAR?
Students must wear an official SMA uniform which can be purchased at the school. Costs are $69 for children sizes and $89 for adults (plus GST). Sparring Gear may also be purchased at the school. Available in various colours and sizes. Cost may vary depending on gender. Male students are required to wear groin protection. For sanity reasons, there are no refunds/exchanges on worn merchandise.
IS SPARRING GEAR MANDATORY?
Yes, for all students ages 7 and above. No exceptions. For the safety of all students, protection must be worn. This includes helmet, gloves, shin guards, boots, mouth guard, and groin protection for male students. Student must have all sparring gear to participate in sparring / self defence classes. Note: Little Monkeys do not require sparring gear.
WHEN DO I TEST FOR MY NEXT BELT?
Belt test readiness is determined by the instructors. A student must complete a minimum number of classes to be eligible to grade. This is not a guarantee, but a guideline. Little Monkeys, Little Dragons and Warriors must earn all their skill stripes to be eligible to grade. Students who are deemed ready will be sent a formal invitation to grade via email.
IS THERE A COST FOR BELT TESTS?
Yes, there is a cost for belt tests. Cost is determined by age and/or belt rank.
CAN I FAIL MY BELT TEST?
Yes. There are 3 things that can happen at a belt test. 1. A Full Pass - meaning you know all the curriculum to a satisfactory level. 2. A Semi Pass - meaning you know some of the curriculum but struggled to master a number of techniques. 3. A Fail - meaning you did not perform your techniques to the bench mark standard for your belt level.
